Washington / Tehran: U.S. President Donald Trump warned that the United States could destroy Iran’s power infrastructure if the conflict escalates further. He said the U.S. has the capability to cripple Iran’s electricity capacity within an hour.
“We can destroy their electricity capacity within an hour. It would take them about 25 years to rebuild it. So we hope it never comes to that,” Trump said.
Trump also claimed that Iran had been weakened following U.S. military actions and had suffered significant damage.
Responding to the warning, Iran threatened that if its power infrastructure is attacked, it could target electricity grids across the region. Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, issued a strong response.
Larijani said Iran could plunge large parts of the region into darkness within 30 minutes if its electricity infrastructure were targeted. Such a blackout, he warned, would create opportunities to hunt down U.S. troops seeking safety.
“Even powers greater than you have failed to destroy Iran. Be careful so that you yourself are not destroyed,” Larijani wrote on social media.
Trump had earlier warned that if Iran attempts to block ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States would retaliate with far greater force. He added that such an escalation could bring devastating consequences and expressed hope that the situation would not reach that point.
