OpenAI has announced plans to begin testing advertisements on ChatGPT in the coming weeks, marking a significant shift in its monetisation strategy as the company looks to offset the rising costs of operating large-scale artificial intelligence systems.
According to a blog post released on Friday, the advertisements will initially be rolled out in the United States and will be visible only to free and lower-tier subscribers. Paid premium users will not see ads during the early testing phase.
The move comes amid growing pressure on AI companies to generate sustainable revenue streams as the demand for generative AI services continues to surge. Running advanced AI models requires substantial investment in computing infrastructure, data processing and energy consumption.
Advertising has long been viewed as a potential revenue source for AI chatbots, but companies have so far been cautious, citing concerns about disrupting the user experience. OpenAI acknowledged these concerns, stating that the initial ad rollout would be limited in scope as the company evaluates user response.
Industry analysts see the development as a pivotal moment in the evolution of AI platforms, signalling a gradual alignment with traditional internet business models. If successful, advertising could become a key pillar of revenue for AI services while allowing basic access to remain free for users.
OpenAI said further details on ad formats and expansion plans will be shared after the testing phase concludes.
