Shimjitha, the accused in connection with the suicide of Kozhikode native Deepak, has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody by the Kundamangalam First Class Magistrate Court. She will be transferred to the Manjeri Women’s Jail following the court order.
Shimjitha was arrested based on a complaint filed by Deepak’s family. Police took her into custody from her relative’s house in Vadakara. The case has drawn public attention after the family alleged that Deepak died by suicide due to fear of public humiliation after a video allegedly showing him sexually assaulting Shimjitha on a bus went viral on social media.
According to the family, Deepak had repeatedly told them that the allegations against him were false and that he was under severe mental distress following the circulation of the video. The Medical College police recorded statements from Deepak’s parents and brother, who maintained that their son was deeply disturbed by the situation. The statement of one of Deepak’s close friends has also been recorded as part of the investigation.
Police officials stated that further investigation is ongoing to verify the circumstances surrounding the viral video, the allegations, and the events that led to Deepak’s death.
