The makers of Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, are closely watching the calendar as they await a crucial hearing in the Madras High Court that could determine the film’s release date. According to trade reports, the team is targeting a Republic Day box office window, provided the legal hurdles surrounding the film’s censor certificate are cleared.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court referred the matter back to the Madras High Court after the producers challenged the stay imposed on the film’s censor clearance. The case is scheduled to be heard around January 20, and if the verdict goes in favour of KVN Productions, the makers are expected to move swiftly to announce a Republic Day release, reported Sacnilk.
Given that Jana Nayagan is widely expected to be Vijay’s final film before his full-time political entry, the producers are keen on a release window that maximises box office potential. Industry observers note that the team may opt for a Monday release on January 26 or choose the preceding Friday to capitalise on the extended holiday weekend. However, any further legal appeal could alter these plans.
Despite the delay, the film’s commercial prospects remain formidable. Trade estimates suggest that before the postponement, Jana Nayagan had already secured nearly ₹40 crore in overseas opening-day advance bookings and around ₹60 crore for its opening weekend, totalling approximately ₹100 crore in global pre-sales. The sudden halt reportedly caused major disruptions for overseas exhibitors across 25 countries, while theatres in Karnataka alone refunded tickets worth nearly ₹6 crore.
Directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan is a high-octane political thriller titled Jan Neta in Hindi. The film stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Prakash Raj, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
