Residents across the UAE will have a chance to witness a rare astronomical double event tonight as the Wolf Supermoon coincides with the peak of the Quadrantids Meteor Shower.
The Wolf Moon, named after ancient traditions, will appear as a Supermoon due to its close proximity to Earth, making it noticeably brighter and larger than usual. Despite its intense glow, astronomers say the Quadrantids meteor shower—famous for fast, bright fireballs—should still be visible.
The Quadrantids take their name from the long-defunct constellation Quadrans Muralis and originate from asteroid 2003 EH1, which orbits the Sun every 5.5 years.
In Dubai, Al Qudra Desert has emerged as a prime viewing location. The Dubai Astronomy Group is organising a special overnight event featuring telescope viewing, astronomy talks, constellation storytelling, and smartphone astrophotography assistance.
The meteor shower is expected to peak in the early hours of the morning, offering stargazers a memorable start to the new year.
