As the UAE steps into 2026, residents can expect several important policy changes that will take effect from January 1, impacting education, taxation, travel, sustainability, and daily living.
One of the key changes affects school schedules. Most private schools in Dubai will now end classes by 11.30am on Fridays starting January 9, 2026, following a nationwide update that sets Friday prayer time at 12.45pm. Authorities say the move ensures students and staff have sufficient time to attend congregational prayers.
The Friday sermon and prayer will also be standardised across the UAE from January 2, 2026, bringing uniformity and better coordination nationwide.
From a financial standpoint, sugary drinks will be taxed under a new tiered excise system starting January 1, 2026. Unlike the current flat 50 per cent tax, the new structure will link tax rates to sugar content, aligning with a GCC-wide model aimed at improving public health.
Travellers arriving at Dubai International Airport can expect smoother entry as the Red Carpet biometric service expands to arriving passengers at Terminal 3. The service uses AI-powered facial recognition to speed up immigration procedures.
On the sustainability front, the UAE will expand its ban on single-use plastics nationwide from January 1, 2026, prohibiting items such as plastic cutlery, plates, beverage cups, straws, and Styrofoam containers. Dubai will simultaneously enter the final phase of its own plastic ban, tightening restrictions further.
Lastly, Discovery Gardens will introduce paid parking from January 15, 2026, with residents receiving one complimentary permit per household and paid subscriptions required for additional vehicles.
Together, these changes signal a shift toward efficiency, sustainability, and standardisation across the UAE.
