2025 has been a landmark year for video games, marked by bold experimentation, emotional storytelling and genre-defining sequels. From deeply personal indie titles to blockbuster adventures that reimagine familiar franchises, this year proved that games can be thoughtful, surprising and endlessly entertaining. Critics highlight a diverse list where puzzle mysteries, open-world epics, cosy simulations and intense action all coexist.
Taking the top spot is Blue Prince, a hauntingly clever puzzle game set inside a shape-shifting mansion. Each day brings a new layout and new decisions, slowly revealing family secrets and political undercurrents. Its layered mystery, combined with elegant design, has earned it recognition as one of the greatest puzzle games ever made.
Close behind is Hollow Knight: Silksong, a long-awaited sequel that tests players’ patience and perseverance. Set in the decaying kingdom of Pharloom, the game delivers punishing difficulty balanced by awe-inspiring discoveries and deeply rewarding victories. Despite its challenges, it remains one of the most emotionally powerful experiences of the year.
Horror fans were captivated by Silent Hill f, which shifts the iconic franchise to 1960s Japan. Infused with folklore, psychological terror and feminist themes, the game offers a fresh yet unsettling take on a beloved series. Meanwhile, The Séance of Blake Manor blends detective fiction and folk horror, drawing players into a chilling mystery set in 19th-century Ireland.
Big-budget titles also shone brightly. Mario Kart World, designed as a showcase for the Switch 2, expands the series into an interconnected open world while retaining its family-friendly charm. Death Stranding 2 continues Hideo Kojima’s surreal vision, transporting players to an apocalyptic Australia filled with striking landscapes and cryptic storytelling.
Role-playing games found new voices in titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a visually extravagant and emotionally heavy journey through a ruined Paris, and The Alters, which explores identity and life choices through a unique cloning mechanic. These games stood out for combining philosophical questions with engaging gameplay systems.
Smaller, experimental games also made a significant impact. Consume Me offered a satirical look at teenage life and diet culture, while Wanderstop provided a soothing experience centred on mindfulness and recovery through running a forest teashop. Despelote, inspired by Ecuador’s football history, delivered a heartfelt story about childhood and national pride.
Action and adventure lovers were treated to thrilling experiences such as Ghost of Yōtei, a visually stunning samurai tale, Monster Hunter Wilds, with its vast ecosystems and epic battles, and Donkey Kong Bananza, which reinvents classic platforming with explosive creativity.
Together, these 20 titles reflect a year where video games pushed boundaries, explored complex emotions and reaffirmed their place as one of the most dynamic cultural mediums of our time.
