Dubai, March 1: Explosions were reported across Dubai late Saturday after Iranian missile and drone strikes targeted key infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates, authorities confirmed. The unprecedented attacks struck parts of Palm Jumeirah, damaged sections of Dubai International Airport, and caused fires at the iconic Burj Al Arab and Jebel Ali Port.
Dubai’s media office confirmed that an incident on Palm Jumeirah — the palm tree-shaped artificial island known for its luxury residences and hotels — resulted in a fire and injuries to four people. Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions and seeing smoke rising from a five-star property on the island.
Debris from an intercepted drone ignited a minor fire on the outer façade of the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab hotel, one of Dubai’s most recognized landmarks. Civil Defence teams responded immediately and brought the situation under control. No injuries were reported at the hotel.
Dubai International Airport (DXB), the world’s busiest hub for international passenger traffic, sustained minor damage to one of its concourses. Airport authorities confirmed that four staff members were injured. The UAE had already closed its airspace as a precautionary measure, significantly disrupting flight operations across the region.
In Abu Dhabi, an incident at Zayed International Airport resulted in one fatality and several injuries, according to initial reports. Meanwhile, falling debris also sparked a blaze at Jebel Ali Port, a strategic maritime facility that handles a significant share of the emirate’s trade and hosts international naval vessels.
UAE officials stated that more than 300 missiles and drones were launched toward its territory, with the majority intercepted by defense systems.
The strikes come amid escalating regional tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Aviation tracking data showed widespread airspace closures across parts of West Asia, with airlines suspending flights to and from major Gulf hubs.
Dubai’s airport and seaport collectively account for a substantial share of the emirate’s revenue, underscoring the economic impact of the attacks. Authorities continue to assess the damage while security measures remain heightened across the country.
