India’s passport has climbed to 80th position in the Henley Passport Index 2026, up from 85th last year, reflecting gradual progress in the country’s global mobility standing. Tied with Algeria, the Indian passport now offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 55 destinations worldwide.
The improvement signals steady diplomatic outreach and expanding international travel access for Indian citizens. While the ranking shows positive movement, India still trails far behind top-ranking nations, with many regions continuing to require visas for Indian travellers. Nevertheless, the current access provides greater mobility compared to some neighbouring countries.
In the global rankings, Singapore retained its position as the world’s strongest passport for the third consecutive year, allowing visa-free travel to 192 destinations. Japan and South Korea shared second place with access to 188 destinations, followed by Denmark, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland in third place.
