Dubai, April 8, 2026: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has achieved a remarkable global milestone, with its public bus fleet surpassing a cumulative operational distance of over 2 million kilometres per bus during 18 years of continuous service.
The record highlights Dubai’s growing reputation as one of the world’s leading cities in delivering high-quality, efficient, and sustainable public transport services.
According to RTA, the achievement reflects the authority’s long-term strategy of maximising asset utilisation while adhering to the highest standards of the circular economy. It also underscores the effectiveness of advanced preventive and operational maintenance practices implemented across the fleet.

Outperforming Global Benchmarks
RTA buses have significantly outperformed those in other major cities worldwide. While buses in London and Singapore recorded operational distances of approximately 1.3 million km and 1.4 million km respectively, Dubai’s fleet exceeded the 2 million km mark.
Despite operating well beyond their planned service life, the buses maintained high efficiency levels. In 2025, the fleet recorded an availability rate of over 93 percent, along with an exceptionally low fault rate compared to global standards.

A Model of Sustainability and Efficiency
The milestone is not just a numerical achievement but a reflection of Dubai’s broader vision to build a smart and sustainable mobility ecosystem. By extending the lifespan of buses, RTA has reduced environmental impact associated with manufacturing and replacement, supporting the emirate’s sustainability goals.
Additionally, the extended service life has led to substantial savings in capital expenditure by delaying fleet replacement and optimising operational costs.

Strengthening Dubai’s Global Position
RTA emphasised that this accomplishment is the result of continuous efforts by skilled teams committed to maintaining the highest levels of performance and quality. The milestone further strengthens Dubai’s position as a global leader in innovation, smart mobility, and quality of life.
The achievement also sets a new benchmark for public transport systems worldwide, showcasing how strategic planning, advanced maintenance, and sustainable practices can deliver long-term operational excellence.
