Thiruvananthapuram, April 2, 2026: Christians across Kerala are observing Maundy Thursday, also known as Pesaha, marking the remembrance of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples.
Special prayers and rituals are being held in churches, including the Holy Eucharist and the symbolic washing of feet, reflecting humility and service. The ritual reenacts the moment when Jesus washed the feet of his 12 disciples, teaching that true leadership comes through serving others.
The word “Pesaha,” meaning “Passover,” has its roots in the biblical story of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt under the leadership of Moses. Christians believe that Jesus shared the Passover meal with his disciples, during which he instituted the Holy Eucharist.
Maundy Thursday is the fifth day of the Holy Week, which began with Palm Sunday. Various Christian denominations, including the Latin, Syro-Malabar, Malankara Catholic, Orthodox, and Jacobite churches, are conducting special services across the state.
The observances will be followed by Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and will culminate in Easter Sunday, celebrating his resurrection, marking the end of the Lenten season.
