Kasaragod: The Congress party is facing strong internal opposition in Kasaragod district over reports that Sandeep Varier may be fielded as a candidate in the Trikaripur constituency.
The District Congress Committee (DCC) has expressed serious dissatisfaction, insisting that a local leader from Kasaragod should be considered for the seat. DCC President P.K. Faisal has made it clear that the leadership will not support Varier’s candidature.
An emergency DCC meeting has been convened on Thursday to discuss the issue and decide the next course of action.
Trikaripur was previously contested by Kerala Congress, but the Congress has reclaimed the seat this time with the aim of wresting it from the LDF. Several local leaders, including Youth Congress state general secretary Jomon Jose and Balakrishnan Periya, have reportedly staked their claim for the seat.
The possible move to field Sandeep Varier has triggered unrest within the district unit, with leaders strongly demanding that priority be given to candidates from the region.
The development highlights growing internal tensions within the Congress as candidate selection intensifies ahead of the elections.
