WhatsApp has announced a range of new festive features to help users celebrate New Year 2026 in a more interactive and fun way. The Meta-owned messaging platform revealed that New Year’s Eve is consistently its busiest day of the year, often setting global records for message exchanges and call volumes.
In an official blog post, WhatsApp noted that on a regular day it supports over 100 billion messages and 2 billion calls, but activity spikes significantly during the 24 hours when the world welcomes a new year. The platform highlighted its role in connecting families, friends, and communities through video calls, group chats, and status updates during the celebrations.
To mark the arrival of 2026, WhatsApp has introduced four new festive features designed to add a celebratory touch to messages, calls, and status posts.
WhatsApp’s New Year 2026 Features:
- 2026 Sticker Pack:
Users can now access a dedicated “2026 sticker pack” to send festive New Year greetings in chats. - Video Call Effects:
For virtual celebrations, WhatsApp has added interactive video call effects. By tapping the effects icon during a video call, users can activate fireworks, confetti, and star animations, making countdown moments more lively. - Animated Confetti Reactions:
The app is bringing back its special reaction animation. When users react to a message using the confetti emoji, an animated celebration effect appears on screen. - Animated Status Updates:
For the first time, WhatsApp is introducing animated stickers in Status updates. Users can post New Year wishes using a special “2026 layout” combined with animated stickers.
WhatsApp’s Tips for New Year Celebrations:
Along with the new features, WhatsApp also shared tips to help users plan celebrations more efficiently in group chats:
- Events: Create and pin events in chats to collect RSVPs and keep everyone updated.
- Polls: Use polls to decide party details like food, drinks, or activities.
- Live Location: Share live location for safety and easy navigation to venues.
- Voice and Video Notes: Stay connected with friends who cannot attend in person by sending voice or video messages.
With these updates, WhatsApp aims to make New Year 2026 celebrations more engaging, whether users are celebrating in person or virtually across continents.
