Netflix is returning to Hawkins once again, but this time in animated form, as it expands the Stranger Things universe following a highly controversial Season 5 finale that left fans divided and emotional. The streaming giant has announced Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, an animated prequel series set between Seasons 2 and 3, raising questions about canon, continuity, and whether the move is an attempt to soften the backlash over Eleven’s fate.
The original series concluded with a dramatic and polarising ending that saw Eleven sacrifice herself as the Upside Down collapsed, leaving Mike devastated and fans furious. Although a later time jump hinted at a possible theory that Eleven may have survived and found peace elsewhere, many viewers felt the ending was unfair to a character who had endured years of trauma and deserved a definitive happy conclusion.
Tales From ’85 will revisit the younger versions of the Hawkins gang—without the original cast returning as voice actors—and adopt a more family-friendly animated tone. Despite this shift, the series promises familiar Stranger Things elements, including supernatural threats, mystery-driven storytelling, and high emotional stakes.
The prequel will introduce a brand-new character, Nikki Baxter, described as taller, tougher, and poised to disrupt the dynamics of Hawkins. Notably, Nikki has never been mentioned in the original series, leading fans to speculate about her role and longevity. Online theories suggest she may be written out dramatically or quietly erased to avoid disrupting established canon—an all-too-common trope in the Upside Down.
By placing the story between Seasons 2 and 3, Netflix faces a delicate balancing act. Nikki’s presence must feel meaningful without contradicting existing events, while still giving fans enough emotional investment to care about her fate. Many viewers believe the series could be an effort to redirect attention from the controversial finale by introducing fresh characters and storylines, while still tapping into nostalgia.
Whether Tales From ’85 is a strategic move to ease fan frustration or simply another expansion of Netflix’s most valuable franchise remains to be seen. What is certain is that the world of Stranger Things is far from over—and Hawkins still has plenty of mysteries left to uncover.
