As the United Democratic Front (UDF) prepares for the launch of Opposition Leader V D Satheesan’s New Era Outreach from Kasaragod, clarity is emerging over the alliance’s candidate for the constituency. According to sources, the UDF has reached a consensus to field Muslim League district president Kallatra Mahin Haji as its candidate from Kasaragod.
Speculation had earlier suggested that Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) state secretary K M Shaji might contest from the constituency. However, internal assessments reportedly indicated the possibility of Hindu vote consolidation against Shaji in a direct contest with the BJP. In light of these concerns, the IUML leadership is believed to have stepped back from that option.
Instead, the party opted for a district-based leader with broader acceptability. Kallatra Mahin Haji, who also serves as the UDF chairman in Kasaragod, is seen as a consensus candidate with strong grassroots support. His candidature is understood to enjoy the backing of both Samastha factions and wide public acceptance across communities.
During his recent visit to Kasaragod for the centenary conference of Samastha, IUML state president Panakkad Sayed Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal held discussions with local leaders to gauge their views. These consultations are said to have played a key role in the finalisation process.
The decision was reportedly firmed up just ahead of the commencement of the Opposition Leader’s outreach programme, signalling unity and preparedness within the UDF camp in Kasaragod.
