As relatives travel from overseas to bid their final farewell, the funeral of Confident Group owner C J Roy has been postponed to tomorrow, deepening the sombre mood around a case that has raised serious questions about official conduct and mental pressure during investigations.
Roy, a prominent businessman, died by suicide on Friday evening at his office in Bengaluru while Income Tax officials were present to complete procedures linked to an earlier inspection. His body will remain at the Boring Hospital morgue until tomorrow morning, after which the funeral service will be held at a church in Koramangala, near his brother’s residence.
Even as preparations are underway, Roy’s family remains unwavering in its allegations that pressure from the Income Tax Department contributed directly to his death. Family member CJ Babu told reporters that Roy had no financial distress and no reason to take such an extreme step.
“There were no debts, no threats, no obligations. The only pressure he faced was from the Income Tax officials, who had been in the office continuously for three days,” Babu said, adding that Roy had asked him to meet earlier on the day of his death.
Roy’s manager, Abil Dev, echoed these concerns, stating that the income tax-related issues began earlier this month and were believed to be resolvable. “He would not have ended his life without extraordinary pressure,” Abil Dev said.
The family’s statements have added to calls for greater scrutiny of investigative practices and the psychological toll they may impose. Authorities have not yet issued a detailed response, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding Roy’s death are ongoing.
