Dubai is taking a major leap toward the future of urban living as the emirate advances its 20-minute city vision, a transformative mobility and planning model approved under the Dubai 10X Initiative by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The concept, introduced by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in 2023, is designed to make everyday life simpler by ensuring residents can reach most essential services—such as schools, healthcare, retail, and recreation—within 20 minutes using walking, cycling, or public transport.
At the heart of the initiative is a strong push for sustainable mobility and road safety. Under RTA’s Strategic Plan 2024–2030, Dubai aims to deploy soft mobility solutions, real-time connected transport systems, and autonomous vehicles to create safer and more efficient journeys across the city.
A major highlight of the plan is the creation of flexible mobility corridors, increased shaded green spaces, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. Pilot projects are already underway in Al Barsha 2, while the broader Dubai Walk Master Plan envisions a citywide pedestrian network stretching 6,500 kilometres by 2040.
This expansive network will feature thousands of kilometres of new and upgraded walkways, along with 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses, linking iconic destinations such as Burj Khalifa, Dubai Marina, and DIFC. The initiative will allow residents and visitors to move seamlessly between landmarks without relying on cars.
Complementing these efforts, Dubai’s long-term urban strategy also targets increased proximity to public transport and major expansions in tourism and commercial land use—signaling a future where mobility, convenience, and quality of life go hand in hand.
