Abu Dhabi, March 1: One person was killed and seven others injured after a drone targeting Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi was intercepted by defense systems, causing falling shrapnel near the airport premises, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
According to airport officials, the drone interception led to debris falling in the vicinity, resulting in the death of one individual identified as an Asian national. Emergency services responded immediately, and the injured were transported for medical treatment.
Zayed International Airport, home to Etihad Airways and a major transit hub connecting Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, issued an advisory urging passengers to check directly with their airlines before traveling due to temporary airspace restrictions across the UAE.
“The safety of our passengers remains our highest priority. We are working closely with airlines and relevant authorities to manage the situation and minimise disruption,” airport authorities stated.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions following joint U.S.-Israeli military operations targeting Iran. In response, Iran has launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks across several Gulf nations, affecting key infrastructure and aviation hubs.
Dubai International Airport also reported minor damage and injuries following similar incidents, while other regional airports have increased security and operational precautions.
Authorities have urged the public to rely only on official updates and avoid circulating unverified information as the situation continues to develop.
